Sometimes Wal-Mart Isn't the Cheapest, Rarely the Best

By Brian White at 05/28/07 09:50
When it came time for me to buy my new Canon, I did my research online, but headed out to Wal-Mart to try out the demo models and make my final decision. I found what I wanted, spent ten-minutes calling over a chubby teenage clerk with pre-plunged and comely neckline, and told her which one to give me. Though it was on display, they didn't have one available for sale.

She called the adjacent store, while I continued inconspicuously leering at her pudgy B-cups, and I was soon on my way to the next store over, with their last model put aside for me.

It was a long drive, but my mind was made up. I got there, on an uncommonly hot day, and sweated myself silly in the store trying to pick up my camera. It wasn't there. They had it on display too, but also, no models for sale, even though the other store sent me over to get it.

Sure, they don't know the first thing about the second thing, and they're basically a pack of minimum wage clerks, but what came next pissed me off more than the fact that two stores didn't have the model, despite my most diligent efforts... It was $30 cheaper at Best Buy, and the memory card was cheaper there even still.

Better service, better prices, and not having to deal with disgruntled kids as well? What a great deal all around! Besides, the four-eyed guy at Best Buy had as much cleavage himself, and my odds of landing him couldn't have been much worse.

[Ed note: if you are truly luck you live someplace that doesn't have Walmart stores.]

How Your PDA Can Get You a Better Price on the Spot

By Brian White at 05/28/07 09:48
I hate to sound elitist as much as I'd love to sound elitist, if only I was somehow entitled. I'm not, but that doesn't mean you can be, and should be. If you've got a Blackberry or other web-enabled telephone, you get to slash prices in ways never before afforded.

Here's how it works. You find the camera you want to buy, you go online right there with your telephone and find out if Wal-Mart or Best Buy has it cheaper, and you tell your salesman that you won't pay more than the adjacent competitor.

This doesn't work with the cut-rate items like socks, pants or batteries, but it does for your television, camcorder or name brand mattress.

They'll hate you for it, but you'll walk out with the best deal, the same product with the same warranty, or you'll walk out empty handed so you can cross the street to save enough money to buy yourself a nice dinner at a nice restaurant.

Oh, and you're welcome.
