How do you choose the right flooring for your home? As we are preparing to sell our home and buy a new one, we have been out looking and comparison shopping for new carpet. The carpet in our current home is green or orange depending upon the room, which was very commmon in the 70's. I happen to have a large home (like almost 5,000 square feet) with mostly carpeted areas. I had no idea where to start, so I headed out to Home Depot.
Well, I have to tell you that this was not a good experience. They had several displays of types of carpets that had a price for square foot and square yard. I started in this arena and looked at several types, the least expensive being just under $3 per square foot.
With some quick calculating, I figured that carpeting my bedroom ALONE would cost me around $1200 to $1500 JUST FOR CARPET! That doesn't include the padding, and heaven forbid we would want it installed! I am not a rich woman, and this came as a great shock to me.
We ventured on to the back of the store where they have the "in stock" carpet on the big rolls. Here I found carpet more to my price range and it still looke pretty darn great. I was happy that I found some that cost only $.69 per square foot, which meant I was looking at something like $340 to carpet my bedroom. I was happy at that and was ready to start calculating how much I needed for each room. I sat down with the friendly salesperson and discussed my options. Then we got to the padding part.
They will not install carpeting over old padding. Now I understand if your padding is crappy, but in a couple of rooms I had just replaced the carpet and padding and the carpet was just ruined by the kids staining it. Well, this little tidbit of information had me asking just how much the padding was. The cost of the cheapest padding was a little over $3 a square foot!
That put me right back at square one. I simply refuse to spend $10,000 on carpeting for a house I am selling. I just want the carpets to be new, fresh and decent. Well, the hunt goes on.
