It's Okay to Shop at Wal-Mart

By Brian White at 05/31/07 09:18
Wal-Mart has gotten a pretty bad rap in recent years for mistreating employees, putting smaller companies out of business, and quashing unions in ways unrivaled throughout all of history. There's always a nugget of truth to these things, but it's not quite like that.
  • Wal-Mart is a proven equal opportunity employer, and not just for racial minorities, but also the elderly, who don't honestly get a second choice in employment.
  • The prices really are pretty good, almost all of the time. Not always, but close to it, and sometimes by far. Case in point; dozen tube socks for a buck-ninety-nine.
  • Tremendous internal opportunity for promotion.
  • Schedules often flexible for parents or students.
  • The lines are always short.
  • They're among the very few who actually care how their international factory workers are treated.
  • They've opted to pay more for electronics to use eco-friendly parts, recognizing that they sell so many, they really can make a difference.
  • All stores have internal recycling programs for things like cardboard. Multiply that by a million employees and you've got an acre of forest a day preserved.
  • Penn & Teller did a special on "hating Wal-Mart", and found it unfounded and BS.
If you want to be dogmatic about it, you can protest the color fuchsia, but in the mean time, grab a flier, park a mile away, and don't feel bad about hitting the big sale.

How to Shop for Thrift Store Couches

By Brian White at 05/31/07 09:14
If you're looking for a cheap couch, your ability to be picky is eliminated entirely. Figure out what's important, be smart about it, and do your shopping from there… at a thrift store.

- Shop at least three stores. If you only go to one or two, you won't get the best idea what's out there.

- Look for daily and weekly specials. You may be able to get that $50 couch half-off if you hit the right day.

- Check the fabric for unacceptable wear, even more than looking at the hideous color and pattern, but more importantly, check for metal edges poking out. If the couch cuts you, it's too expensive.

- Sit down and feel the comfort. There may be broken springs you won't notice visually, and it may outright hurt.

- Let go of the idea of getting a pretty couch. Pretty is expensive, always has been, even in dating. Swallow the pride you already swallowed by agreeing to shop at a thrift store for something as ubiquitous as a couch.

I'm not saying you shouldn't, indeed you should. Besides, when it comes time to move, you can always leave it behind. It may be cheaper than moving it, and it' definitely cheaper than putting it in [404 Check: was link to http:/ / shpreibucoroa. blogspot. com/ 2007/ 04/ patio -storage -boxes. html, anchor: storage] .

Sometimes Wal-Mart Isn't the Cheapest, Rarely the Best

By Brian White at 05/28/07 09:50
When it came time for me to buy my new Canon, I did my research online, but headed out to Wal-Mart to try out the demo models and make my final decision. I found what I wanted, spent ten-minutes calling over a chubby teenage clerk with pre-plunged and comely neckline, and told her which one to give me. Though it was on display, they didn't have one available for sale.

She called the adjacent store, while I continued inconspicuously leering at her pudgy B-cups, and I was soon on my way to the next store over, with their last model put aside for me.

It was a long drive, but my mind was made up. I got there, on an uncommonly hot day, and sweated myself silly in the store trying to pick up my camera. It wasn't there. They had it on display too, but also, no models for sale, even though the other store sent me over to get it.

Sure, they don't know the first thing about the second thing, and they're basically a pack of minimum wage clerks, but what came next pissed me off more than the fact that two stores didn't have the model, despite my most diligent efforts... It was $30 cheaper at Best Buy, and the memory card was cheaper there even still.

Better service, better prices, and not having to deal with disgruntled kids as well? What a great deal all around! Besides, the four-eyed guy at Best Buy had as much cleavage himself, and my odds of landing him couldn't have been much worse.

[Ed note: if you are truly luck you live someplace that doesn't have Walmart stores.]

How Your PDA Can Get You a Better Price on the Spot

By Brian White at 05/28/07 09:48
I hate to sound elitist as much as I'd love to sound elitist, if only I was somehow entitled. I'm not, but that doesn't mean you can be, and should be. If you've got a Blackberry or other web-enabled telephone, you get to slash prices in ways never before afforded.

Here's how it works. You find the camera you want to buy, you go online right there with your telephone and find out if Wal-Mart or Best Buy has it cheaper, and you tell your salesman that you won't pay more than the adjacent competitor.

This doesn't work with the cut-rate items like socks, pants or batteries, but it does for your television, camcorder or name brand mattress.

They'll hate you for it, but you'll walk out with the best deal, the same product with the same warranty, or you'll walk out empty handed so you can cross the street to save enough money to buy yourself a nice dinner at a nice restaurant.

Oh, and you're welcome.

Why Stores ask for Phone Numbers and Zip Codes

By Brian White at 05/28/07 09:43
Maybe you've been to a mega-chain store, and maybe they've asked you for your phone number or zip code. It's a strange question, if you don't know the purpose, so maybe you've wondered why. There are a couple of very good reasons for it, and none of them have anything to do with an invasion of your privacy.

The zip-code question is purely geographical. The numbers are used to show where all the customers live, so that when it comes time to close stores, or open new ones, they know where their customers live. You might get a new store closer to home, and your local one may close if you routinely drive to the further one.

The telephone number question means that, if you want to return an item, and you've lost your receipt, they can pull up the transaction by your telephone number and honor the return. This can also help make lists of buying patterns to facilitate new sales programs and consider different promotions.

What to Look for in Thrift Store Clothes

By Brian White at 05/28/07 09:11
Shopping can be tough, and even with discount stores like Wal-Mart, Ross and TJ Max, the prices can be too high. If you want top shelf clothes without the high prices, you can find good deals at the thrift store just by keeping an eagle eye.

First off, make sure you like the garment first. If you like it, read on. If not, you're in the wrong store.

Next, check for tears and stains. It's easy to miss these things, so look the garment over carefully, and every inch of it. Any tear, any stain, forget the garment.

Before you call it a deal, check the stitching for loose or unraveling threads. Even one or two can be a warning sign too valid to ignore.

Most importantly of all, make sure the price isn't too high. You might be helping a charity, but if you have money on tap, buy the new clothes you actually want and throw your money directly to the needy.

A record 7 items in the plastic bag

By Wilbur Corncob at 05/27/07 07:14
The sign next to the cashier says "maximum 10 items in a bag". I don't think I've ever seen anything close to that many items put in a bag.

Yesterday was a record though with 7 items stuffed into a single plastic bag! I was shocked. 6 of the 7 items were of course already packaged in plastic, so there wasn't much reduction in plastic.

I do think that I could have left with half as many plastic bags and been just as happy and secure in my purchases. For example, I don't think adding a hammer to plastic bag full of junk packaged in plastic would dimish my purchases. Though the hammer was put in a plastic bag all by itself.
